Ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a superficial inflammation in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. It typically results in ulcers and bleeding. The patient may experience alternating periods with few or no symptoms, followed by periods with frequent stomach pain and diarrhea that may be mixed with pus, blood and mucous. The exact cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown, however family history and immunological factors have been proposed as possible causes.
